Masahiro Fujita AIBO : Toward the Era of Digital Creatures
نویسنده
چکیده
The 21st century will become an era of autonomous robots that help and support people. Thus, they will be considered as partners of human beings. In this paper, the author introduces AIBO, the first product model of Robot Entertainment Systems. The main application of this robot is a pet-style robot, which must maintain a lifelike appearance. The author suggests how to maximize the complexity of responses and movements to solve the problem of substantially increasing the lifelike appearance of autonomous robots. The technologies used in AIBO are also described. Although AIBO is not intended for service or hazardous work, the development of AIBO is a major step toward a new era of autonomous robots in the new

An ethological and emotional basis for human-robot interaction
This paper presents the role of ethological and emotional models as the basis for an architecture in support of entertainment robotic systems. Specific examples for Sony’s AIBO are presented as well as extensions related to a new humanoid robot, SDR.
متن کاملEvolving Robust Gaits with AIBO
An evolutionary algorithm is used to evolve gaits with the Sony entertainment robot, AIBO. All processing is handled by the robot's on-board computer with individuals evaluated using the robot's hardware. By sculpt-ing the experimental environment, we increase robust-ness to diierent surface types and diierent AIBOs. Evolved gaits are faster than those created by hand. Using this technique we e...
متن کاملEvolution of Controllers from a High-Level Simulator to a High DOF Robot
Building a simulator for a robot with many degrees of freedom and various sensors, such as Sony's AIBO 4 , is a daunting task. Our implementation does not simulate raw sensor values or actuator commands , rather we model an intermediate software layer which passes processed sensor data to the controller and receives high-level control commands. This allows us to construct a simulator that runs ...
متن کاملDogs or Robots - Why do Children See Them as Robotic Pets Rather Than Canine Machines?
In the not too distant future Intelligent Creatures (robots, smart devices, smart vehicles, smart buildings, etc) will share the everyday living environment of human beings. It is important then to analyze the attitudes humans are to adopt for interaction with morphologically different devices, based on their appearance and behavior. In particular, these devices will become multi-modal interfac...
متن کاملEthological Modeling and Architecture for an Entertainment Robot
Ethology is the science of studying the behavior of animals in their natural environment. While much attcntion has been paid in robotics to neuroscientific models of behavior (e.g., [1,17]), less attention has been paid to realistic ethological models other than in simulated studies. It is our contention that ethology provides great insights into the design of practical robotic systems. In this...
